When nature's wrath comes and breaks our foundations, the real test of humanity is how quickly we become the pillars of hope for each other. Today, in a country that is in a very critical situation, Nepal has to deal with the unimaginable tragedy of the floods that have washed away and yet is also being proven incredibly resilient.

 

The recent tragedy triggered by the roaring Bhotekoshi has sadly given a new meaning to the magnitude and dimensions of natural disasters in our beautiful country. The flooding of the northern border was caused by persistent rainfall and dramatic glacial motion, and the flood came faster than anybody could have expected.

 

In just a few hours, it drowned large expanses of human settlements, swept away essential hydropower plants and utterly tore up essential lifeline bridges between our communities.

 

The numbers are staggering, more than 900 people have died and thousands more are still missing and tens of thousands are displaced and are living in precarious health camps. Moreover, the crisis has gone from rescue to survival right before their eyes, with their homes destroyed.

 

More to this, clean drinking water and safe sanitary facilities and basic health care services is now a serious threat to the already vulnerable population, for whom continued rehabilitation and support is needed.

Stepping Up When Nepal Needs Us Most

We feel that we are truly serving our Nepalese communities at Softy Hygiene. The heart-wrenching images of Rasuwa flooding and numerous families being split apart in broad daylight was very distressing to see.

 

However, during days of national mourning, grief should be immediately addressed with action. We knew we had to be quick and decisive, as the financial resources needed for helicopter rescues, medical camps and rehabilitation were immense.

 

Softy Hygiene was in direct coordination with the Nepal government to assist in the large scale relief efforts, which are ongoing, in the country, acting under our corporate social responsibility (CSR) and our desire to contribute to the country.

 

Furthermore, we humbly approached the table to donate Rs. The Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund received the donations of Rs. 21,11,111 in the presence of our Finance Minister of Nepal, Swarnim Wagle, respectively.

 

Our goal is to make sure that the state machinery will be funded to provide immediate humanitarian relief for the stranded and displaced families who have lost everything but hope, as is widely reported in almost all national media, such as Makalu Khabar and Bizmandu.

 

Although this financial aid is not very lucrative, our motive during this severe crisis of economy and infrastructure in the flood-stricken areas is a commendable example of cooperation to restore faith in humanity.

Hygiene Beyond Borders: A Zero-Profit Pledge

A disaster can take away homes, but should never take away human dignity. During this period of massive displacement, safe sanitation for females, such as period products, is a critical health need.

 

Not just that, women and girls in the flood-hit areas are facing unparalleled extreme hardships in temporary shelters without basic sanitary supplies. So, we have rallied our resources to respond to the urgent need and refreshed the disaster relief fund updates to help those who want to.

 

We are engaging with people who are coming to us with the intention of obtaining Softy sanitary pads from us in order to distribute tothe flood victims.

Similarly, we are making efforts to coordinate with the benevolent persons, NGO, and corporates who would like to contribute SoftySanitary Pads to the flood affected peopleat an affordable cost without any intention of making profit.

 

We're giving our sanitary pads at a zero-profit rate to maximise the impact of each and every donation. Also, we remove all commercial profit from us, and this means there is a greater supply of basic hygiene products delivered to the women and girls who are in dire need of them at this time.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Our Collaboration with Students of KUSOM

Although we work so hard on disaster relief, we also understand that breaking the taboo on women's health is an ongoing process. Education cannot wait.

 

Lately, we had the great chance to empower the spirited youths from Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM).

 

Distributed sanitary pads to eight passionate student groups of KUSOM. We have given dozens of sanitary pads each for 8 strong groups to them.

 

Their mission? Get these much-needed supplies to remote, rural schools throughout Nepal, and deliver much-needed awareness sessions to female students and teachers.

 

These young change makers are not only distributing pads, they are starting important taboo breaking conversations about menstruation and the very least discussed topic, menopause.

 

We are extremely proud to be their grassroot supporters to KUSOM students! Likewise, we have been working with some of the top student projects, and here are some of their details:

We look at how much is still to be done and all of our heartbreaks for those lives that have been ripped up by the flood waters. We remember those who lost their lives and shed tears for them with a weeping nation.

 

To those who have lost their loved ones of family, friends and the homes they had known, we see your silent, long suffering.

 

We know there's no money or any supplies that can ever replace a beating heart or can cleanse the pain of that horrid day, but please remember you aren't walking through this hard situation alone, we are with you!
